Play Therapy

Play therapy creates a space where children can safely explore emotions such as anxiety, sadness, anger, grief, or confusion. Rather than expecting children to articulate complex feelings verbally, therapists use play as the language of communication. Through games, art, storytelling, movement, and imaginative play, children are able to process experiences that may feel overwhelming or difficult to put into words.

At Formation Counseling Center, our therapists use play therapy within a trauma-informed and attachment-based framework. This means we focus not only on helping children regulate their emotions but also on strengthening the relationships and environments that support their growth. Many of the challenges children face—such as anxiety, behavioral struggles, school stress, family transitions, or grief—are deeply connected to the relational systems around them. Our work often includes supporting parents alongside the child so that the home environment becomes a place of increased safety, understanding, and connection.

Play therapy can help children develop emotional awareness, confidence, problem-solving skills, and resilience. Our therapists work closely with families to understand each child’s unique personality, needs, and experiences. Together, we create a safe and creative therapeutic environment where children can grow, heal, and develop the tools they need to thrive both at home and in the world around them.

The brain is built through experience, and play is one of the most powerful ways children integrate their emotions, relationships, and sense of self.
